TOORJI KA JHALRA

Toorji Ka Jhalra, constructed in 1740 by Maharani Tanwar Ji, wife of Maharaja Abhay Singh Ji, is one of Jodhpur’s most enduring symbols of architectural and cultural heritage. This ancient stepwell, or baoli, was not merely a utilitarian water source, it was a site of deep communal and ritual significance. Stepwells in Rajasthan were traditionally commissioned by royal women as part of a legacy of care, sustainability, and devotion, serving both as reservoirs and as vital gathering spaces where women from the community would meet, rest, and exchange stories. Carved from red sandstone with remarkable precision, the geometry of its descending steps and the play of shadow and light within the well reflect the ingenuity of the period’s craftsmen. Today, Toorji Ka Jhalra remains an iconic monument, honouring Jodhpur’s legacy of water stewardship, gendered architectural patronage, and its layered, living history.
